Mode of address: how a media text communicates with or addresses the audience.
It is expressed in three words:
EITHER direct or indirect
EITHER formal or informal
Another word that describes the 'tone' of the text and how it 'talks' to the audience.
Mode of address is the way in which relations between the publishers and the audience are constructed. Broken down into; Images, Videos, Layout, Language used, and Headlines/words used
Task: pick 2 stories (one digital, one traditional) and analyse the mode of address.
Hampshire shark: Appeal for head to be returned (BBC NEWS- TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL)
images: 4 images throughout the story page to illustrate the significance of the story and help audiences understand the story through visuals. One primary image used as a thumbnail to entice readers to click on the page and read more.
videos: citizen journalism addition to the report to show an additional POV which is an informal mode of address used for the story to better relate and capture the attention of audiences.
layout: several quotes, images, and videos as well as mini paragraphs to capture the overall story. The paragraphs are more formal than the quotes and videos to better communicate the reported story for an audience. The layout is text broken up by images to maintain audience engagement.
language used: Formal language was used to ensure the story was taken more seriously but there was also use of direct speech to draw the readers in and better engage them overall.
headlines: indirect headline used to explain and give an overall idea of what the story is about.
Protests in France (TWITTER- DIGITAL)
video: citizen journalism is used to capture a video of protests happening which immediately captures audience's attention. Additionally, audiences can interact with the tweet by commenting and therefore providing more information about the event which isn't included within the initial tweet.
language used: informal
other issues affecting the article structure:
purpose- what is the intention of the story?
audience- who is the story aimed at
context- what is the background, what makes this story is relevant?
use of speech- how is speech (quotes) used within the story- why?
language techniques- repetition, rule of three, alliteration, rhetorical question
paragraphing and sentence structure- how long and complex the structure is will differ to ensure audiences are engaged
